Ok, so why should you care about what I have to say? This
is what I ask myself about any critic before I take the time to
respect their opinion, (I prefer to believe that others ask
themselves this too.) This is my third attempt to explain myself
because the first two just didn't ring right. You see, I can go on
for volumes about the things I prefer, but that isn't direct
enough for me. Explaining myself isn't the point; explaining to
you, why my point matters, is.
I'm an alternative thinker; my perceptions aren't trendy or
institutionalized. I think for myself, what I like is where I
place my attentions. Marketing ploys or advertising hype does not
easily influence me; I leave that to my heart.
So why take the time to read my critiques?
I have a unique perception to share, something that you may relate
to or, even better, might give you a new way of looking at
something. I wont lie to you, I have nothing to gain in doing so.
I'm not out to manipulate or "sell" you something in any
way. If you like something, great, it's all up to you. It's not
for me to tell you what you like; it's up to you to decide for
yourself. I respect those who think for themselves and I prefer
that you do so.
My goal is pretty straightforward: Letting you in on some pretty
cool things that might have slipped past you, or… Warning you
about the crap that the "industry" wants you to buy in
to. I have a standard that doesn't waver or swerve, if it's worthy
I'll stand by it, if it's not I'll say so outright. I give
criteria for the conclusions I draw and present them as clearly as
I can. Again, I am not getting paid to do this, nor is there some
corporation behind me; I do this because sometimes one voice is
all it takes to open another's eyes. If you get something,
discover a new way of seeing something, from what I've written?
Then I've done what I set out to do.
So much great stuff has slipped through the cracks, or is
currently overlooked, in lieu of some pretty foul fare. Great
stuff has been lost due to poor "ratings" or "box
office receipts" or a change in the popular trend. If at all
possible I hope to give these forgotten tidbits a little worthy
attention, even if they are gone, at least some of us haven't
forgotten. And now we have DVD's, a wonderful way for new eyes to
explore the lost gems!
I warn here and now that I may include
spoilers in my critiques, if you haven't experienced what I
am writing about you may want to before reading me. I prefer to
give it straight, and if that means spilling a few beans along the
way I think it's only fair. The experience is about the entire
affair, be it a series on TV or a limited-release movie, if
something works really well I'll mention it, on the same hand, if
something doesn't work at all I'll share that too.
Please remember that my critiques are my opinion solely and hence,
like them or not, that's your issue. You are welcome to write to me, please feel free to
share your opinions!
Now for a taste of my preferences, (some things you might like to
know about before reading me…)
I am a fan of sci-fi, fantasy, horror,
forensics/crime and mystery. I am also a sentimental

bleeding heart and I like my fiction served with a strong
dose of optimism/hope. If I feel that I am being manipulated in
negative ways, I am likely to "check-out", walk away and
never look back. Now, I am not screaming for
happily-ever-after-endings every time, in every situation, however
neither do I see anything wrong with wanting an optimistic or
hopeful ending. It's my fiction, my entertainment, and I get to
choose for myself what I like. Something that leaves me feeling
good will get high marks in my opinion, something that leaves me
with the taste of bile in my mouth? Well, I'm not going to sing it
accolades that's for certain.
Now horror is a different creature in my mind,
it's not about hope or optimism; it's about great special effects
and how much of an adrenaline rush I get during my experience.
However, the more I feel a connection between the characters and
me my regard for the piece rises. Most horror flicks don't care to
flesh out the characters since they are "cannon fodder"
anyway. There are a few exceptions, (mostly Stephen King's work),
which holds great honor in my eyes. Get me involved, make me want
them to survive, and then LET THEM; to me this makes it a great
horror experience.
Special effects are important to me, I want to see creative ways
of slaughter, not just the "same old, same old". Make me
ask: "How'd they do that?" Get my blood to rushing, make
my heart thunder in my chest and I am a very happy girl. Give me a
creative special-effect-heavy scene like the opening sequence of
"Ghost Ship"? And I am in total awe! (Yeah, most of
"Ghost Ship" sucked royally, but that opening sequence?!
Took my breath away, yes it did. Talk about creative, unexpected
and new… that scene was spectacular!)
(Please note that there is a difference between
"special effects" and "digital special
effects". I like the old fashioned,
make-the-prosthetic-dummies-and-ladle-on-the-blood special
effects. Digital effects are great too, but they just aren't as
textured for me.)
As I said before, I'm a huge fan of fantasy and science fiction, (if
the web site wasn't enough already, here you learn what a true
nerd I really am…) I prefer urban and futuristic fantasy,
(modern day with a twist so-to-speak, like "Buffy the Vampire
Slayer" or post-apoplectic like "Jeremiah"), but
any kind of fantasy works in retaining my attention. (The
"Lord of the Rings" trilogy comes easily to mind right
now as THE BEST of the best Fantasy ever made!) My sci-fi leans
towards "Star Trek", "Firefly" and
"Farscape". My fantasy leans towards "Dead Like
Me", "Joan of Arcadia" and "Carnival".
Please take a moment to review my
rating system; it will give you insight as to what is really
awful and what is so bad it becomes an amusing ride, (as well as
what's good and what's great…). If you have any questions you are just dying to ask?
Please do!
Bon appetite',
Tix
P.S. Just because a movie or tv program isn't listed here doesn't
mean I have no opinion about it. It simply means I haven't gotten
around to adding it. Some programs/movies I will overlook
intentionally, others I may not have thought to add yet… So if
curious about my opinion concerning a movie or tv program that
isn't already here, ask! If I
have seen it, I'll be happy to share my thoughts with you. |
